editorial ambivalence by brancoprata
For this photography essay, our starting point was the word “ambivalence” and the meaning behind it. So what’s the definition of this word and why do we feel so drawn to it? In a very basic way, ambivalence is the coexistence within an individual of positive and negative feelings towards the same action. Like everything in life, it’s normal to have mixed reactions about everything – even marriage!
We wanted a raw, honest exercise on a relationship between two people: true feelings that overcome the flaws; heartfelt words spoken that make you forget everything else; and, the acknowledgement that perfection is tangible only when you realize that your strength is built on the good and the bad. We wanted our images to focus on the couple and the space – the actions and movements between the two and their reactions to the scene.
We chose a simple and discreet environment with unpretentious details so the couple stood out. With this type of focus in life, it allows us to realize that indecision or uncertainty are also part of the path to reach a joyful outcome!

editorial: a minimalist setting in porto
One of the things that we really enjoy about editorial work, is the possibility to create imagery that will hopefully inspire future clients. We allow our minds to run free and the end result is something that we feel, makes us stronger as a brand. One of our main goals when we design and shoot editorial work is to showcase a certain concept and bring it to life. To show couples that sometimes you don't need to do what everybody else is doing, and today's editorial is just about that! You don't need an incredible scenery and a beautiful sunny day for your engagement photos. It's all about choosing a setting that speaks to you both and is part of who you are as a couple, even when you aren't connected to a certain place, the fact that it's architecture, the way the lines frame you, or even, the minimalist look and the textures make you feel drawn to it, we promise, you will love the images.
For years now we passed by this incredible building in Porto, that is actually a courthouse, and we always commented how much we like it! So one of those days, me and André just looked at each other and decided to do something with that building as a backdrop. We absolutely love the lines, and the texture on the wall and on the floor. Of course that moody day, really helped, because we ended up loving the color and the light on the photos.

Last November we went to Torroella di Montgrí, near Barcelona, to speak and do a workshop during Traveling Light, where more than 80 photographers from all over the world came to meet, share and learn from each other while disconnecting from the day a day life, and you can see more of this experience here.
For us, it was the perfect ending for and incredible year filled with many new challenges, outstanding moments and unforgetable memories. Traveling Light was a magical moment for all who attended, you could see the excitement in the air and we will never forget this week at Cinema Montgrí, where Albert Roig and his team where able to create an one of a time event!
During one of the days, we held a workshop, where we had the chance to speak and sshare our creative process when we design and shoot editorial work. For this workshop we prepared a story that we are sharing today. Each image portrays a significant moment in our plot. Our storyline is about a woman searching for her freedom, after feeling trapped into a routine.
We can't thank enough our incredible team, who made this possible under crazy conditions: Diva Borrelli Make Up Artist (a true angel walking the Earth), Canigueral Mesas con Esencia, Otaduy and Natalia.
